PASSION, CONQUEST, AND TRAGEDY IN GAUL

During Julius Caesar’s famed conquest of Gaul, the Roman Army was frequently raided by marauding Germanic warriors. Angered by these persistent attacks, Caesar built the first bridge on record over the Rhine River—in only ten days—and conducted a brief but devastating invasion of Germania.
That’s what history records. But what if there were another reason for Caesar’s incredible construction and relentless retaliation? What if a woman was involved?
Caesar Obsessed offers an engrossing tale of what really happened.
Following Caesar’s narrow victory over the tribes of modern-day Belgium, the ravishing Devorra is given as a hostage by her father, the vanquished tribal leader. Caesar’s roving eye quickly settles on her, but Devorra loves the valiant Belgic warrior Gabinier. Believing he has been lost in the battle, she eventually succumbs to Caesar’s carnal desires. When Devorra is spirited away to Germania during a raid, Caesar’s anger sets off a cascade of seismic events, ranging from the bloody battlefields of Gaul to the chambers of cunning politicians in Rome.

The risks and ensuing consequences threaten to derail Caesar’s ultimate quest—to rule the Roman Empire!

Advance Reviewers Endorse
Caesar Obsessed

"A real page-turner, full of action, with a great plot well developed characters, and the perfect level of historical underpinnings.
What struck me the most about the book was the wonderful amount of detail about the period; the military structure, the Roman culture, such as the clothing descriptions to the strategy of the army to the engineering techniques...all simply amazing."

EARLY PRAISE FOR
CAESAR OBSESSED

"This book is based on ancient history, but I was amazed at how relevant it is for today. From the romantic trysts to the treatment of slaves, this plot--although historical--could easily be set in a modern day war zone.
Don't even think about starting this book until you have time to read it from cover to cover. From the vivid storytelling of war, sex, and history, Licata really grabs you and does not let go."

A few more words…

"Tony Licata's piece of historical fiction is a marvelous tale depicting Caesar's famous battles from Gaul to Germania. Having read Licata's previous work, Hannibal's Niece, it is clear Licata is a master of diction and imagery, as each page keeps the reader with a clear view of a setting long past without being bogged down with the details

caesar's bridge over the Rhine river

CAESAR'S OWN MEMOIRS DISCUSSED A BRIDGE...

A central element of the Caesar Obsessed story line is the bridge which, according to Caesar’s own memoir, he built over the Rhine River separating Gaul and Germania, in only ten days! How could that monumental event, spanning such a huge distance, have been even remotely possible?

Caesar Obsessed weaves a complex story around this mind-boggling event, forming a rich tapestry of complex characters, passionate lovers, political intrigue, and military and engineering logistics and tactics. There’s something of interest in this book for all readers. Regarding the bridge itself, the novel traces Caesar’s recruitment of Mamurra, the brilliant young engineer who Caesar plucks from the obscurity of the ranks to be the Prefect of Engineers, overseeing all engineering duties of the Roman Army in Gaul. Caesar shares with Mamurra his grand strategic desire to build a bridge over the Rhine, rather than simply ferry the army in boats, to demonstrate to the world the capabilities of his army. Charged with the duty, Mamurra’s team develops a design for the bridge and begins fabricating the myriad of components needed for the task. And the key role played by the piteous natives taken into brutal slavery by the Romans during their conquest of Gaul is not overlooked. All of this, of course, is underway for months and months before Caesar gives the order to commence construction. But what provokes the monumental undertaking? And what is the real reason driving Caesar’s obsession with a seemingly impossible 10 day schedule? The answers, which are not in Caesar’s memoirs, are revealed in the book!
